The traditional kissing gate is a simple and effective way of providing pedestrian access through any type of fence, wall or hedge. In the countryside it provides a reliable barrier to stock, which cannot be accidentally (or deliberately) left open. In the garden or orchard it is aesthetically pleasing and unusual. Unlike a stile, the kissing gate does not require any degree of athleticism to negotiate, nor, importantly, does it present any danger under wet or slippery conditions, or from lack of long term maintenance.
